Scientists Drill Into the Earth for Answers
Do you know where volcano lava comes from? 你知道火山的岩漿從哪裡來嗎？
It comes from the earth's mantle.
The mantle is the earth's middle layer.
It has lots of very hot rock.
岩漿在地函裡面。地函位在地殼的下面，是地球的中間層，裡面有很多滾燙的岩石。
What's in this mantle rock? What can we learn from it?
Scientists say we can learn more about volcanoes and earthquakes.
We can learn more about how life started on earth and many other things too!
這些岩石裡面有甚麼呢？我們又可以從這些岩石學到甚麼？科學家說，我們可以更了解火山跟地震，還有生命的起源！
But mantle rock is deep in the earth. It is not easy to get.
Scientists first tried 62 years ago!
但是地函很深，這些石頭不容易取得，科學家 62 年前就試過了！
Mantle rock is closest to the ocean floor.
So scientists are working on a ship.
They have a big drill.
離地函岩石層最近的地方是海床，於是科學家在船上工作，他們有一台巨大鑽頭！
The drill is making a very deep hole.
The drill takes the rock from the hole. Now scientists have one kilometer of
mantle rock!
這個鑽頭鑽了一個很深很深的洞，把裡面的石頭取出來，現在科學家有超過一公里這麼多的地函岩石層！
This is great news for scientists everywhere.
It's the deepest mantle rock we have!
And every day, the drill goes deeper and gets more mantle rock!
這是目前能夠拿到的，地球最深處的岩石！而且這個鑽頭每一天都在繼續往下鑽！
We can learn more about the earth and life from this mantle rock. The earth's
mantle has a lot to teach us! Keep drilling!
